Back in August i asked friends whether they had a question for me about my work. So here's a podcast answering all of them. Thank you so much to everyone who submitted a question ^^ I really love this set of questions. I feel it represents such a wonderful sense of diversity and i love how each question reflects the asker. yall are wonderful 🩷 I know i say video i changed my mind >_< Show notes + Questions: 01:06 - why gore whore? the past didnt go anywhere: making resistance to antisemitism part of all of our movements - https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/april-rosenblum-the-past-didn-t-go-anywhere 03:18 - How did you get into gore/horror? What is the appeal of gore/horror to you? What do gore/horror reveal about the world? 07:39 - I know you love horror and i have the impression film is the medium where horror is the most successful. How linked is your love of film and horror ? Would you still love film so much if there was no horror movies ? Is that an absurd question to ask ? 10:32 - What inspired you to start editing, where did you learn, and what drives your work? 13:00 - When working on or coming up with your work, what is the process for determining what footage becomes part of a montage, and what gets it's own section where you see the whole clip or scene? Like, is it more of a whatever works for the piece kind of thing, or more based on the structure and initial framework you have for it? 14:07 - In curating footage for a mixtape, what guides your decisions on where to cut? 17:27 - You did a podcast a while back, about movies and how you thought that people were too eager to dismiss some movies because of their content (like they'd think there's too much gore or genitalia so they just dismiss it outright and never watch it). how do you navigate what movies you do and don't give a watch? Like surely there's movies that just don't seem interesting so you watch something else instead? my review of Amuse Me(2013) - https://boxd.it/gq8TMH 20:05 - I've noticed your work often has a narrative - do you determine the story you're going to tell before editing or does it emerge from the clips you've curated during the editing process? 22:18 - How does your plurality influence your film making process? deborah stratman interview "i think linearity is a trap" - https://www.documentary.org/online-feature/i-think-linearity-trap-deborah-stratman-discusses-last-things 25:09 - how do your sexual interests and kinks and inform the way you shape your art? 27:15 - How do you deal with the divide between more traditional views of morality and your own sense of it and how that relates with your own identity 29:18 - Given that horror has historically included misogynistic themes, how do you work to undermine oppression through working with and showing scenes that could be triggering to those who have felt that oppression? Like how do you skirt the line of using shocking imagery that has historically often been misogynistic in its presentation to criticize misogyny? Meeting Death as a Friend (my suicide film list) - https://boxd.it/yx8UE 35:38 - The gore/shock mixtape format is an incredibly subcultural one. Was there a degree of deliberate alienation (positive) of more mainstream audiences with this choice to express what youre exploring? Or was it to appeal to the particular subculture that consumes mixtapes? 39:21 - For a lot of queer people, myself included, queerness in art is fundamentally intertwined with transgression. Your work is quite beautiful in its deliberate unflinching intent to shock, and that transgression plays a key role in the text of the films. Do you have specific motivations as a queer artist using transgression and social taboos in your work? Artist-in-Residence: Carta Monir - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nia1E5KkMM4 42:27 - When selecting imagery and soundscapes for your films, do you prioritize those that will disturb audiences out of their complacency or those that will evoke what you feel is a liberatory alternate vision of the world? here is the meme i mention - https://mastodon.social/@gorror/117439540637288416 45:38 - how have you felt about the response to your art so far?
