Much of the UK's rail network was unfairly dismantled because the minister in charge created a study to show it was unviable and should be replaced by roads. This minister also owned a roadbuilding company which benefitted hugely, but was inexplicably allowed to dismantle the railways due to this study. (Then, a few years later, the same minister fled the country due to unrelated tax evasion charges, which showed what kind of person was in charge of transport at the time.)
