Most growers are wrapping up, but on this little hill in West Virginia the real work is just starting. I walk the whole place after a night of rain. Tomatoes and peppers are about done. The beds are full of sheet mulch. There are terraces that got overgrown, ponds that need to be dug wider so they actually catch the water coming off the hill, and a pond that blew out after an accident with the drain pipe. My plan for the cold months is to clear ground, sheet mulch, and get wheat and maslin (a rye and wheat mix) into as much of the open ground as I can. Then the camera died. I finished the video out anyway. The second half is a thought I've been turning over after a good conversation with a vegan gardener. He makes real points about producing fertility without animals. But on a subsistence scale, where you have to grow what you eat and you can't buy compost or cover crop seed or supplements, the math changes. There's the B12 problem. There's the difference between a garden that grows some of your potatoes and a farm that has to produce a complete diet. Grains are most of what a family eats, and a land constrained setup like this one needs the animals and the grain. Not because any of this is perfect. All of it is better than the industrial system. But there is a real difference between a permaculture food forest and having enough calories, protein, and vitamins on land you actually live on. I'm not claiming I have it all figured out. This is the honest version: what I'm building, why, and the parts I'm still working through. We live on about 0.8 acres of cleared land with 3.8 acres of woods behind it, and I'm trying to feed a family of seven from it. Subscribe if you want to watch me try.
