Reform Won't Save Us: Why the System Can't Fix Itself

There are three things that are not going to save us from climate change: the energy transition, reform, and corporations. This one is about reform. Reform is not a tool for solving problems. It is a tool for absorbing complaint. The COVID child tax credit lifted about two percent of the population out of poverty and then it was not renewed, because it worked. Social Security gets chipped away a little at a time. The bank bailouts found something like four hundred billion dollars for the banks and a small fraction of that for the people they were meant to help. The IPCC has quietly rewritten its own standards downward, and it calculates with technologies that do not exist yet. And the farm bill always ends up at the top, where the money already is. The research on this is not ambiguous. When a majority of the country wants something and the wealthy do not, it has a very low chance of happening. When the wealthy want something the majority does not, it happens anyway. You cannot reform a mechanism that was designed to reform a system. It ends up like a cat with no claws. So the answer is not a better reform. It is building the life you want and using your right of refusal on the systems that already exist. The long version, with the papers and the numbers, is on the site under articles: https://loopfarmstead.com If this was useful, subscribe. New videos go up as they come out. We wrote a book about all of this. Meditations on Agriculture is five thousand years of what farmers learned about making land feed a family, told straight.
