With a history stretching back to the 15th century and probably earlier, this form of mobile pastoralism has come under huge pressure and in Romanis it has virtually died out. There are strong advocates, particularly among ecologists, for its survival, but Mr Pascu, interviewed here in 2013, showed how little support there was for a way of life he plainly adored. Sad and sentimental though this film may be in some ways, it is evidence of a dedication to the land and its abundance that the selfish, self-destructive, neo liberal mindset cannot hope to appreciate. So it's my way of saying another, better world is possible. My encounter with Vasile Pascu was enabled by a farmer called Anca Lar Crisan who was involved with the sheep farmers' association of Cluj. Vasile impressed me with his down-to-earth humour, adaptability, community spirit, resilience and honesty, qualities I recognised in many of the sheep breeders I knew in Wales. He died not long after we met and I neverhad a chance to show him what I had made from his words.
